Writing a Resume With Transferable Skills
Writing a Resume With Transferable SkillsMany people these days are starting to take the opportunity to start writing a resume with transferable skills. Instead of wasting all that time and effort trying to look for all the obscure things that people might have done to get a job, people are actually concentrating on building a resume from the ground up. The one thing that most people will find very difficult to do is write a resume that is not very good. That's why there are many other people who are using this method today. They are able to look back into their past life and figure out all the things that they could have done to change themselves and get their current life all started. Some people may want to change their future by changing the way they think about their career. They may want to figure out ways to help them become more qualified to work in their particular career. In this case, a resume would be a perfect tool to use. A person with transferable skills will be able to write a resume that is specifically designed to help them get into the best career for them. One of the first things that someone will notice when they look at a resume is that it may not have very much information. This is a good thing. A resume should contain all the information that a person wants to have. It is also important to realize that the higher level of the field that a person is in, the more detailed the resume will need to be.There are a lot of different areas that you can choose to go into. For example, you can focus on some of the military jobs and training that you did. You can also focus on the different areas of business. There are other areas as well that may interest you as well. When you write your resume, focus on what you know and what you have done in the past. It's a good idea to sit down and write down all of the different things that you know. If you happen to know any experience or knowledge that may help someone else, then make sure to include that in yo ur resume. Think about how you can show that your skills and experiences have helped others. Make sure that your resume has all of the information that you can possibly think of.You will also want to make sure that you fill out your resume correctly when you're looking for different positions. Make sure that you are giving all of the information that you feel that you have to show. You will be surprised how quickly people lose it and never come back to look at your resume again. Because it is full of all of the necessary information, it will be quite easy for the reader to figure out what you are looking for.Make sure that your skills and the skills that you have in general are listed correctly. Make sure that you don't leave anything out because it could leave a bad impression for your potential employer. Also, do not be afraid to take the extra time to try to get some extra information that you may not know. Write a resume from the ground up and be ready to answer questions that y ou may not know the answers to.When you start looking for a job, remember that a resume is going to be one of the most important things that you need to write. Make sure that you keep it all in mind when you're writing it so that it is not so much of a struggle to follow.

The Self Control app that will finally stop you procrastinating
The Self Control app that will finally stop you procrastinating Some of us are hurtling swiftly towards the Easter holidays, which can only mean one thing. A crap ton of uni work. However, our millennial attention spans can sometimes make revision and essays challenging, lets say. I mean, Im a #adult and still find it tempting to check the Facebook app on my phone in between tasks at the office. Have a pesky procrastination problem? Enter the Self Control app. The Self Control app is the nuclear option for online procrastinators This app is no joke. Like other internet-blocking apps (Windows users, SelfRestraint and Cold Turkey are great alternatives), you add a domain, and the app blocks access to it. You can set a timer on the app anytime from a couple of minutes to a few hours, depending on how much focus you need. All attempt to access a domain on Self Controls blacklist will result in a page that looks like this: Heres the kicker. You cant reset the apps timer by switching to a different Internet browser. You cant reset it by restarting your computer. Even deleting the app off your computer wont reset it. You just have to wait until the time runs out. This sounds terrifying but necessary. Where do I get it? You can download the Self Control app for your Mac here at their official website. However, if you thought you could escape by checking Twitter on your phone instead of your computer, think again. Self Control is now available on the iOS app store for $2, if you think the temptation to browse the web will be too great. Its not as no nonsense as the desktop version, though. You can remove a blocked page from Self Controls blacklist on your phone and you can easily access it again. However, if you do so, youll feel a mighty, mighty sense of guilt. Be warned. Good luck with all of your deadlines with some willpower, and a little bit of techy help, youll make it through this busy season. Communication Break Down
Communication Break Down Would you like to know one reason why you might still be unemployed? Are you communicating the qualifications employers are looking for? Have you told them and shown them, in terms they can understand, why you are a fit for their job? It may not be how you are looking for a job, but what you are saying (or not saying) that is impacting your results. Continue reading to find out how you can bridge the communication gap, oh, and land a job faster! Study Data Devry University built a Career Advisory Board who commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct a study in September 2011. The survey queried 540 hiring managers at top U.S. companies and 734 job seekers to determine what skills are valued most by employers and which qualifications job candidates demonstrate during the hiring process. You can learn more about the study and its results by visiting the Career Advisory Board site. Key Findings The study found a disconnect between attributes presented and attributes valued. 69% of hiring managers felt that some job seekers had the required skills and traits. Not bad, but not great either. Now, you may be thinking, yeah, but employers create this really unrealistic wish-list of requirements. I dont think thats whats happening here. If you read on, youll see what I am talking about. This is something that job seekers can control. It is what you put on your resume and in your cover letter and online application that determines how the employer views your qualifications. Become really, really good at reading the job descriptions and matching your qualifications to their needs and quantifying whenever you can. The interview is another key opportunity to demonstrate the skills and traits required. Develop relevant, emotionally intelligent stories of success, failure and lessons learned! You Think Youre Qualified but How job seekers view themselves and how they are viewed by employers shows the mis-communication. Entry Level Candidates The opportunity for improvement here is for entry level workers to demonstrate and prove their work ethic. They think they have it, but employers dont see it. Overall, there are pretty close with how they show their accountability, time management, work well with others and self motivation. Tip: Tell stories and give examples of times they have gone above and beyond, cite perfect attendance recognition, describe taking on and completing extra assignments. Mid Level Candidates Mid level candidates need to do more to show they are motivated. But as you can see below, mid level candidates over estimate their qualifications consistently. They think they are qualified, but the hiring manager doesnt see it. Better examples of time management, examples of being accountable, and more concrete stories about communication and problem-solving successes would improve their chances of being a better match. Tip: Talk about taking initiative to solve problems or identifying problems and solutions. Give examples of projects requiring time management and prioritization. Managerial Candidates Wow! In this case, the managerial candidates realize they lack some of the essentials. They will need to develop a better global outlook and business acumen and strategic perspective to reach the expectations of future employers (and they know this). They view their high integrity to be greater than perceived by hiring managers therefore, demonstrating those qualities in their materials will greatly benefit their observed qualifications. Tip: Begin now building some of those requisite competencies around strategy, business acumen and understanding of a global economy. And be able to provide examples of situations requiring integrity! So, did you take anything away from this? What action will you take or what is your suggestion for hiring managers?

Job seekers and entrepreneurs subscribe to LinkedIns Answers -
Job seekers and entrepreneurs subscribe to LinkedIns Answers - Whether you are currently looking for a job (or just thinking about beginning a job hunt) or if you are promoting your own business, it is important to do what you can to stand out of a crowd of people. U.S. News World Report says there are statistically five unemployed people for every job, compared to an average of 1.7 people for every job in the three years before the recession. One way to help you demonstrate your expertise is to share your thoughts via LinkedIns Answers section. If you are not familiar, LinkedIns Answers offers a venue for people to ask and reply to questions about all different topics. The questions run the gamut; some seem silly, but others are quite serious. A quick review shows the following as current questions: Is it time for the Cinema industry to rethink its business plan? How will the recent tax bill effect solar and renewable energy finance? Pick a letter in the alphabet and write a sentence using letters in the alphabet in order Example: A big cat does everything Looking for virtual purchasing guest lecturers in GA 400 Corridor. To find questions to answer, follow the MORE tab along LinkedIns top toolbar. Select Answers. (See the figure below.) To search based on topics (For example: Administration, Business Operations, Business Travel, Career and Education, Conferences and Event Planning, etc.), select Advanced Answers Search (right next to the Answers Home tab). Select the topics of interest and click on SEARCH. Read through the questions, choose the ones you are interested in answering and reply in the form provided. LinkedIn allows you to suggest other LinkedIn contacts to answer the question and offers the opportunity to share a link in reply to a question. If you have a blog, you may consider replying via your blog and sharing the link. Or, you may already have a post that provides a good answer; share that link.) You can even reply privately to the questioner if you do not want your answer to be public. Answering questions and demonstrating your expertise will help alert others in your industry and those interested in your work (whether you are a job seeker or entrepreneur) that you are willing and able to serve as an expert. In fact, I connected with my very first online client after answering some career oriented questions and hired my first web developer after he answered my question One way to keep track of questions you might want to answer is to subscribe to the RSS feed of a topic of interest. If you are not familiar, RSS stands for really simple syndication. It is a way to receive information either via a reader or in your email, so you dont need to personally visit every website or blog you enjoy to see if there is new information (or a new question). Common Craft has a great video to describe RSS. (If you dont use a feed reader already, maybe it is time! I use iGoogle, which you can use by signing up via your Google account. The video points out how to get started.) Heres how to subscribe to LinkedIns Answers: From LinkedIns top toolbar, select MORE, then select ANSWERS. Scroll down On the right side of the screen, you will see a column called BROWSE. Select any topic from the list. (For example, LAW AND LEGAL). Once you selected it, scroll down again. At the bottom of the column, it will now have a little orange RSS symbol (shown to the right) and it should say: Subscribe to new question in: Law and Legal Click on it. Select the feed reader you use, for example, I use GOOGLE. Choose to add to your reader or your homepage. Youre done! Subscribe to as many as youd like, or just plan some time every week to review questions in LinkedIn. Stay tuned for more ways to demonstrate your expertise and stand a head above the rest!

What Type of Writing Sample Should I Send With Resume?
What Type of Writing Sample Should I Send With Resume? The most important part of sending a resume to a company is to decide what type of writing sample should I send with resume. So what type of writing sample should I send with resume? Well the most common answers are essays, articles, speeches, and thesis letters.First, I will tell you that no writing sample is enough for every single job you get. So what is better, sending a thesis letter or a document? In short, thesis letters are generally used when you are writing a paper to convince the hiring manager that you have done your research and all you are ready to present is a presentation of your thesis. In other words, this is more of a summary than a full report.Since a thesis is not what you will be using as your writing sample, I would recommend you start from reading a sample essay. For example, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has its own online curriculum where students can study various topics and write an essay on it.One of the first things I do when I'm creating a sample for a typical writing sample is to read a book. When I found out about this, I started reading a lot of books about writing. Some of the books that made me consider writing an essay included Barbara Kingsolver's 'The Simple Way to Writing,' (which makes the most important lesson of this book) and Sherry Turkle's 'It's Not What You Know, It's What You Can't Do That Makes You So Special,' (which helps you improve your writing skills). In this article, I'll give you some tips that I found useful while reading books. The first thing you need to do when you are searching for new books is to pick one of the books that you want to use for research because they will help you understand how to better study and write. Another tip is to read everything you can find in your library, which is not a bad idea because sometimes, there is nothing that will show you the mistakes you are making while you are doing your studies. In the first par t of the new research, you will be asked to collect information and create a diagram of the topic. This will help you figure out the major parts of the topic. The second part is to write a five-page or five-article research.Once you have done all the research, you will now have to create a writing sample. The writing sample you create should be a report about your research. Here are some tips on writing a research report:

1 in 2 Workers Would Leave Job for Higher Paying Job
1 in 2 Workers Would Leave Job for Higher Paying Job So much for job loyalty. According to a new survey of US employees, 52% said theyâd be willing to leave their current job if a better offer came along, while another 44% said they were actively looking for a new job. âEncouraged by low unemployment rates and frustrated with lackluster wage increases, many U.S. workers are looking for new and better jobs,â said Ray Baumruk, employee research leader at Aon Hewitt, a global talent, retirement and health solutions company that surveyed 2,000 U.S. employees to reach its findings. In February, the number of Americans who quit their jobs voluntarily was at a nine-year high. Why do Americans feel so comfortable leaving their current gigs, despite the possibility of a bear market? For one thing, âlousyâ wage growth could make job seekers think better, higher-paying opportunities may exist. Aon Hewittâs study found that of the top five things Americans think differentiate one job from another, a job that provides above average pay topped the list. How to Dress Up for Halloween at the Office - Work It Daily
How to Dress Up for Halloween at the Office - Work It Daily Only one week until Halloween... scary, huh? October flew by! Are you planning on coming to work in costume? Is your office having a party? Halloween is a fun holiday, however, dressing up at the office can be extremely fun or incredibly awkward. Here are some things to remember when getting spooky at the office: 1. Keep it Office Appropriate Remember, you're still at the office. Make sure you costume fits correctly and doesn't show too much skin. Halloween is a great excuse to show your co-workers a different side of your personality, not a different side of your body. 2. Check With Your Co-Workers Every office has a different dynamic and different rules. If you're not sure what's office appropriate, talk to your co-workers or boss and find out what they plan to wear. This will give you a better idea of what's acceptable. 3. Don't Be THAT Guy (or Girl) You know that guy... that guy who dresses up as a political character for the sole purpose of sparking controversy. Or that guy who comes into the office dressed in bubble wrap so every time he moves, the whole office knows. And, above all else, don't be that guy who makes rude comments about other people's costumes. Talk about a buzzkill. Image Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!
