Manage Your Micro-Managing Boss and Eliminate Work Stress

Manage Your Micro-Managing Boss and Eliminate Work Stress Weve all been there. Your micro-managing boss gives you way more urgent tasks to complete than humanly possible and asks for updates on a project  you were just given this morning. I dont work well like this. When I worked in the past for micro-managing, energy zapping bosses, I get the deer in the headlights frozen look and cant do anything.because I dont know what to start on. I get majorly overwhelmed, stressed out of my mind, and ready to quit. Been there, too? I thought so. To avoid the stress and anger with this type of situation, there are easy things that you can do. You have to take control of this fast before your boss starts taking control of your schedule, your calendar, and your mind. When I interviewed Dr. Lois Frankel, author of  Nice Girls Dont Get the Corner Office, she had some great advice for us on this topic. She said, One of the most common mistakes that women make is making miracles happen.  I define a miracle as getting something done with less money, fewer resources and in less time as humanly possible. Women need to understand that miracle workers get canonized and not recognized. Every workplace has a baseline for hard work. You have to work up to that baseline or you going to get called out.  If you go over the baseline consistently, it really doesn’t contribute to your career because you just get more work to do. One way to handle this is to learn to manage other people’s expectations. Managing other peoples expectations is the #1 way to reduce stress and improve your relationships with these types of bosses. Here are a few more specific ways to make the best out of this stressful and frustrating situation: Note: The boss is a he in this article, but I know micro-managing women are out there, too! How to Manage Your Micro-Managing Boss Eliminate Work Stress Do  the Best Work You Can It may take time for your boss to trust and respect you, but you have to show them what they want to see. There is something they are not getting from you that is making them feel uncomfortable right now.  Try to make your boss life easier and dont give them any reason to lose that trust. How can you make your micro-managing boss confident in your abilities? If there is a task that you already do that your boss is constantly reminding you about, get it done early or tell them you are working on it before they even ask. Over time, they wont remind you because they know you are on top of it. Even better, try to implement a new project management/to-do list system where you can tell what the other person is working on. For instance, right now I use Asana with my assistant so I know what she is working on today.  I dont need to remind her and check-in with her because I can see what she is working on and her deadlines. Continually Check in Ask for Help Give daily or weekly updates.  Dont wait for them to ask you how the task is going and what you are up to. Instead, constantly remind them so they feel  comfortable. Make sure you know the deadline of when they expect your projects to be completed by. Set times for check-in meetings so they see them on the calendar and knows when they will get an update from you.  That way when they try to micro-manage you, you can say, I will give you an update at our status meeting on Tuesday. Plan Ahead Know what they are going to ask and when. Oftentimes, they might give you a deadline but really want it ahead of schedule. Figure out what the real deadline is, not just when they need it finalized.  One thing that my assistant does every day which I LOVE is she sends me a daily email with a list of things she completed that day and any issues she had. I now have so much trust in her because she is so consistent and I can really count on her to get the things done that I need done.  If you are being extremely micro-managed, try sending a daily email with the status of each item you are working on and if you need their input or help on anything. Dont Complain It just makes you feel worse to stay in a negative state of mind. What are some positive qualities about your manager that you can focus on? Maybe your boss has a lot of knowledge in a certain area and helps you with certain tasks. A negative work mindset will breed a bad work environment and make things much worse for you in the long run. Try not to get mad and gossip about them to your family and co-workers. Its all about the Law of Attraction. The more you focus on the negative things in your life, the more negative things will happen.  Shift your focus.  If you need to, think about the great things you enjoy about your work environment and your other colleagues. What else about work do you love? You Can Say  No Dont do everything that is asked and dont be a miracle worker. Ask them to help you prioritize the tasks you have been given. At one point in my career, I was given an urgent task by my boss that would have taken me 3 weeks to complete but he needed it in one day. I said no, that isnt possible. Then my boss said he didnt really need it anyways and it all went away. ?? They might be a little shocked at first that you are putting your foot down.  But, once you start saying no to your boss, they will start getting used to it and it will get much easier for you to say no again. Saying no has actually been a huge motto for me this year. Theres only so much time in the day and I cant do everything for everyone. I have to focus on what matters and what will give me the best results without taking on additional stress. Dont Rely Only on Email to Communicate There is so much on email that can get misconstrued when communicating. If you are getting stressed with all the urgent red flag emails (that is my biggest pet peeve) ask to have weekly or daily meetings with your boss to prioritize your tasks. You will probably get more details about the tasks, and communicating in person (or over the phone) will make your boss feel better about how you are doing. You will also feel less frustrated talking with your boss and get clear on your action items. Maybe you will find that some of the tasks really arent required or urgent anyways. Most importantly, this experience with your micro-managing boss will teach you so much that you will use again in your future work experiences. That is exactly what happened to me. Once you work for this type of boss, you can easily manage it again professionally and calmly. Trust me, theres a lot of them out there so you probably will have a few experiences with micro-managing bosses in your lifetime. And I know you dont want to hear this but it really will get better with time. It takes time to build that trust and prove yourself. It can be so frustrating when someone doest trust you right away. Just be patient and pretty soon there will be less micro-managing and you can be trusted to do the great job that you know you can do. Dont quit. This is just a test and you will learn a ton about yourself and working with other people.  You can do this! Question:  Have you had a micro-managing boss in the past? How did you handle it?  I would love to hear about it in the comment section below.

How to Stop Working for the Man

How to Stop Working for the Man Many people want to change their career paths for so many different reasons. Maybe you don’t agree with the ethos of your company anymore, or you want to feel like you are making a difference. Whatever it is, there are people everywhere wishing they could change their career path, but are stuck in their current one. Here are a few ideas and suggestions on how to do exactly that, from the obvious to less obvious. With a bit of networking and a push in the right direction, so many people can change their career paths for the better. If you’re tired of working for the “man”, or just want to try something different, there are some ideas here for everyone. Ask Around The art of asking around, or knowing the right people, can really get you everywhere. Even if you dont have friends in high places, there are plenty of opportunities to network. Places such as coffee shops or bars, can all be great places to get chatting about careers, and what line of work people are in. Do you want to start working in the world of art? Then start hanging out at gallery openings, and meet some like minded people. You would be surprised where an off hand conversation can get you. Sometimes, it really is about who you know. Do Your Research Thoroughly Online is of course one of the best places to look for work, but make sure your research is thorough. Try different key words in your search, and get inventive with how you describe the job. Mistakes can easily be made in a job advertisement. Why not look a bit further a field and consider relocating to another area? It can’t hurt enquiring and registering with agencies who might be able to help you find a job. Try looking at ones like Alexander Daniels Recruitment Agency. Often these agencies might be specific to regions, or specialise in finding careers in certain areas. It is possible that they might even have connections, or know certain employers well and have a good relationship with them. It never hurts to do your research thoroughly, and use the more obvious routes of finding different careers. Opportunities can be easily missed, so make sure your research is thorough. Get Educated You don’t have to go back to university, but picking up a few extra qualifications here and there can’t hurt your job search. Often organisations offer courses and qualifications alongside work, so look out for them. There are also Masters courses, or even evening classes, that can boost your CV. The advantage of  a Masters course, is they are often vocational and aimed at those already in the workplace. Getting another qualification can give you a push in the right direction, especially if you are planning on changing your career drastically. Changing your career is never easy, but by following some of these ideas, the transition can be that much smoother. Get out there, and get looking for a new career. There are so many out there for your to try. . Image credit.

Writing a Resume With Transferable Skills

Writing a Resume With Transferable SkillsMany people these days are starting to take the opportunity to start writing a resume with transferable skills. Instead of wasting all that time and effort trying to look for all the obscure things that people might have done to get a job, people are actually concentrating on building a resume from the ground up. The one thing that most people will find very difficult to do is write a resume that is not very good. That's why there are many other people who are using this method today. They are able to look back into their past life and figure out all the things that they could have done to change themselves and get their current life all started. Some people may want to change their future by changing the way they think about their career. They may want to figure out ways to help them become more qualified to work in their particular career. In this case, a resume would be a perfect tool to use. A person with transferable skills will be able to write a resume that is specifically designed to help them get into the best career for them. One of the first things that someone will notice when they look at a resume is that it may not have very much information. This is a good thing. A resume should contain all the information that a person wants to have. It is also important to realize that the higher level of the field that a person is in, the more detailed the resume will need to be.There are a lot of different areas that you can choose to go into. For example, you can focus on some of the military jobs and training that you did. You can also focus on the different areas of business. There are other areas as well that may interest you as well. When you write your resume, focus on what you know and what you have done in the past. It's a good idea to sit down and write down all of the different things that you know. If you happen to know any experience or knowledge that may help someone else, then make sure to include that in yo ur resume. Think about how you can show that your skills and experiences have helped others. Make sure that your resume has all of the information that you can possibly think of.You will also want to make sure that you fill out your resume correctly when you're looking for different positions. Make sure that you are giving all of the information that you feel that you have to show. You will be surprised how quickly people lose it and never come back to look at your resume again. Because it is full of all of the necessary information, it will be quite easy for the reader to figure out what you are looking for.Make sure that your skills and the skills that you have in general are listed correctly. Make sure that you don't leave anything out because it could leave a bad impression for your potential employer. Also, do not be afraid to take the extra time to try to get some extra information that you may not know. Write a resume from the ground up and be ready to answer questions that y ou may not know the answers to.When you start looking for a job, remember that a resume is going to be one of the most important things that you need to write. Make sure that you keep it all in mind when you're writing it so that it is not so much of a struggle to follow.

The Self Control app that will finally stop you procrastinating

The Self Control app that will finally stop you procrastinating Some of us are hurtling swiftly towards the Easter holidays, which can only mean one thing. A crap ton of uni work. However, our millennial attention spans can sometimes make revision and essays challenging, lets say. I mean, Im a #adult and still find it tempting to check the Facebook app on my phone in between tasks at the office. Have a pesky procrastination problem? Enter the Self Control app. The Self Control app is the nuclear option for online procrastinators This app is  no joke.  Like other internet-blocking apps (Windows users, SelfRestraint and Cold Turkey are great alternatives), you add a domain, and the app blocks access to it. You can set a timer on the app anytime from a couple of minutes to a few hours, depending on how much focus you need. All attempt to access a domain on Self Controls blacklist will result in a page that looks like this: Heres the kicker. You cant reset the apps timer by switching to a different Internet browser. You cant reset it  by restarting your computer. Even deleting the app off your computer wont reset it.  You just have to wait until the time runs out. This sounds terrifying but necessary. Where do I get it? You can download the Self Control app for your Mac here at their official website. However, if you thought you could escape by checking Twitter on your phone instead of your computer, think again. Self Control is now available on the iOS app store  for $2, if you think the temptation to browse the web will be too great. Its not as no nonsense as the desktop version, though. You can remove a blocked page from Self Controls blacklist on your phone and you can easily access it again. However, if you do so, youll feel a mighty, mighty sense of guilt. Be warned. Good luck with all of your deadlines with some willpower, and a little bit of techy help, youll make it through this busy season. Communication Break Down

Communication Break Down Would you like to know one reason why you might still be unemployed?   Are you communicating the qualifications employers are looking for? Have you told them and shown them, in terms they can understand, why you are a fit for their job?   It may not be how you are looking for a job, but what you are saying (or not saying) that is impacting your results.   Continue reading to find out how you can bridge the communication gap, oh, and land a job faster! Study Data Devry University built a Career Advisory Board who commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct a study in September 2011.   The survey queried 540 hiring managers at top U.S. companies and 734 job seekers to determine what skills are valued most by employers and which qualifications job candidates demonstrate during the hiring process.   You can learn more about the study and its results by visiting the Career Advisory Board site. Key Findings The study found a disconnect between attributes presented and attributes valued. 69% of hiring managers felt that some job seekers had the required skills and traits.   Not bad, but not great either. Now, you may be thinking, yeah, but employers create this really unrealistic wish-list of requirements.   I dont think thats whats happening here.   If you read on, youll see what I am talking about. This is something that job seekers can control.   It is what you put on your resume and in your cover letter and online application that determines how the employer views your qualifications.   Become really, really good at reading the job descriptions and matching your qualifications to their needs and quantifying whenever you can.   The interview is another key opportunity to demonstrate the skills and traits required. Develop relevant, emotionally intelligent stories of success, failure and lessons learned! You Think Youre Qualified but How job seekers view themselves and how they are viewed by employers shows the mis-communication. Entry Level Candidates The opportunity for improvement here is for entry level workers to demonstrate and prove their work ethic.   They think they have it, but employers dont see it. Overall, there are pretty close with how they show their accountability, time management, work well with others and self motivation. Tip: Tell stories and give examples of times they have gone above and beyond, cite perfect attendance recognition, describe taking on and completing extra assignments. Mid Level Candidates Mid level candidates need to do more to show they are motivated.   But as you can see below, mid level candidates over estimate their qualifications consistently.   They think they are qualified, but the hiring manager doesnt see it.   Better examples of time management, examples of being accountable, and more concrete stories about communication and problem-solving successes would improve their chances of being a better match. Tip: Talk about taking initiative to solve problems or identifying problems and solutions.   Give examples of projects requiring time management and prioritization. Managerial Candidates Wow! In this case, the managerial candidates realize they lack some of the essentials.   They will need to develop a better global outlook and business acumen and strategic perspective to reach the expectations of future employers (and they know this).   They view their high integrity to be greater than perceived by hiring managers therefore, demonstrating those qualities in their materials will greatly benefit their observed qualifications. Tip: Begin now building some of those requisite competencies around strategy, business acumen and understanding of a global economy. And be able to provide examples of situations requiring integrity! So, did you take anything away from this? What action will you take or what is your suggestion for hiring managers?

If you are not familiar, RSS stands for really simple syndication. It is a way to receive information either via a reader or in your email, so you dont need to personally visit every website or blog you enjoy to see if there is new information (or a new question). Common Craft has a great video to describe RSS. (If you dont use a feed reader already, maybe it is time! I use iGoogle, which you can use by signing up via your Google account. The video points out how to get started.) Heres how to subscribe to LinkedIns Answers: From LinkedIns top toolbar, select MORE, then select ANSWERS.
